Julie found Clemmy at a small, rural animal control facility. She had horribly sunburned eyes, long toenails, lost fur from flea dermititis, and had obviously had many puppies. She was one of the most gentle dogs Julie had ever met, and her name means "gentle." Caring staff and volunteers at animal control helped get her cleaned up and Julie fostered Clemmy through Franklin County Humane Society. It was just a few weeks before Julie and Barry decided she needed to be a member of the "permanent pack." Clemmy helped brighten Maxwell's last months and continues to help new, scared foster dogs come out of their shell with her gentle ways. In her "spare time" she enoys stalking squirrels (and butterflies). Her fur has grown back with lovely fringe befitting her English Setter heritage, and new humans who meet her usually comment that "she's so soft." And then continue to pet her, which is her favorite thing!
Maxwell was abandoned on city streets with another old dog friend. He spent six weeks in a Humane Society with his hopes of adoption fading as he became more and more stressed and agitated - constantly barking because he just wanted to be with the people. The caring staff realized he was going downhill and contacted OldDog Haven. On the way home, Maxwell managed to crawl through the car dog barrier to get in the front seat with Julie. He lived as a foster dog with Julie for three months, before being adopted by her. He was a "talker," always making his feelings known, and was intensely loyal to Julie. He lead his small pack with great protectiveness of his girls. At 14, Maxwell was still chasing birds, squirrels, and (unfortunately) any darn cat that came in his way. Maxwell passed away at about 15 in 2011. He was the offical Canine Advisor for The Grey Muzzle Organization, and the model for their logo dog. Belle
Belle lived with Julie and Barry from about age 8 to 11. She was abandoned and ended up at a very large Humane Society in Washington. Despite a great personality, she sat alone in a cement pen for three weeks, probably because she was older, had greasy fur, and a big shaved spot on her back where she'd created a hotspot from stress. Realizing that all this was cosmetic, Julie took Belle home, started a medicated bath regimen for her fur, and put her on good diet. Belle was frequently complimented on her great looks and beautiful soft coat. She was a happy dog who loved to run and explore outdoors, but always came right back to her people. She practiced "continuous learning" for her social skills - most likely, she didn't "get out much" in her previous life.

Sassy is ancient - at least 15 and showing the effects of a hard life. She walks VERY slowly but never gives up, and wants to be in on everything that's going on. At Julie's she goes on lots of car outings and she loves every minute (even if she sleeps through a lot of it). Hopefully this will make up for the time she spent isolated outdoors because she "smelled" - due to chronic skin and ear infections from years of untreated food allergies (not to mention flea infestations). Sassy is now on a strict allergy diet and most of her fur has grown back. She sleeps on her choice of beds most of the day (often in the office with her Dad, Barry, with whom she has a special bond), but always gets up to greet her people when they come home, with a happy wag and squeaks. Quite a change -- when she first came she never wagged her tail and barely lifted her head. It's hard to say how much longer Sassy will be with us (we've already enjoyed her company for over a year), but Julie and Barry will make sure it's the best part of her life. Sassy started out as a Final Refuge dog for OldDog Haven, in hospice care with Julie and Barry, and was adopted by them in 2008, so she'll never have to worry about a home again.
UPDATE April 2009: Sassy passed away peacefully after almost two years with us, a time filled with love . Her memorial is on Flickr, http://www.flickr.com/photos/30507947@N04/sets/72157617664586179/detail/.
